ALBANY TWILIGHT LEAGUE SET TO BEGIN 70th
SEASON
Friday, May 12th 7:30 pm
ALBANY, NY – On Friday, May 12th, the Albany Twilight League will open its 70th season when defending Tholl Division Champions, Davies A.C. meets the 1998 League Champion, Troy Haymakers at Bleecker Stadium at 7:30 pm.
“There is great deal of tradition and history in the Albany Twilight League and we are looking forward to continuing it in this milestone 70th season,” said Twilight League President Bill Miles. “The talent level in the league this year is at its greatest in a long time. We have a very high level of collegiate players coming in and we’ve more than doubled the amount of professional players from last year.”
The Albany Twilight League was founded in 1931 by George Elwell with a roster of 10 teams. A great history had begun when teams like Charlie Callahan’s legendary Schuylers, Graves and Rogers, Central and McEnaneys, the Roxy’s of the ‘50’s, Mike’s Subs and Finkle’s of the ‘60’s, and Tony Rossi’s Sons of Italy and Tim Lane’s Oppenheims in the ‘70’s all took the field. This season the league is comprised of teams like All-Stars Academy, Albany Senators, Colonie Raiders, Davies A.C., Mama’s Pizza, Rensselaer Honda and Troy Haymakers.
Each year, the league draws from
NCAA Division I, II, and III players from around the Northeast, and in recent
years has drawn from players around the country. This year the league will
enjoy the company of former Albany-Colonie Diamond Dogs MVP third baseman, Paul
Reinisch and former Dogs teammate, Joe Mariano as the two join forces with
All-Stars Academy. Last season,
All-Stars Academy won the league championship by defeating the Troy Haymakers
3-0 in a best-of-five series. The
Haymakers, who won the league title in 1998, had made their second straight
trip to the Championship Series.
Other former pros joining the league
this year include Ira Tilton, a former draft pick of the Philadelphia Phillies,
Garrett Larkin of the Pittsburgh Pirates, and Mike Serbalik of the Los Angeles
Dodgers. Several other independent league players can be seen this season
including Dave Perry, formerly a Catskill Cougar of the Northeast League, Nate
Kosoc, former A-C Diamond Dog, and Paul Robare and Andy Negus formerly of the
Adirondack Lumberjacks.
This season the Twilight League will also host the Upper New York State Stan Musial Tournament at Bleecker Stadium from Friday, July 28-Monday, July 31. Last season, the league sent two teams to the tournament—Rensselaer Honda and Albany Senators—held in Syracuse. The Senators, who won the 1998 State Championship, reached last year’s title game before falling to the host team, Sherman Park Phillies, while Honda lost its first two games of the event.
